FAMILIES

Everest Build 2014 aims to build at least 100 houses in a week.
International and national volunteers will work alongside Habitat home partners to construct houses in five different models in the village of Jaymangala, Chitwan district.

FAMILY STORIES:

Story 1 Name: Bishnu Maya Moktan Family: Husband, 3 sons, 2 daughters Occupation: Labour Monthly income: NRs 40,000-45,000 Address: Ratnanagar-Salghari, Chitwan
Bishnu Maya lives with her husband, three sons, and two daughters in a house with two rooms. It is made up of broken bricks with mud mortar and CGI sheet for roofing. She shared that seven family members living in two small rooms is really difficult. Moreover, with her growing kids she feels there is a lack of privacy. She and her husband have been thinking of renovating their house and increase the size to four rooms. But the monthly income they generate is only sufficient enough for two meals a day and educating their five children.

Story 2: Name: Parbati Tamang Family: Husband, 2 sons Occupation: Truck Driver Monthly income: NRS 15,000 Address: Ratnanagar-Salghari, Chitwan
Parbati, her husband and two sons are living in a house with two rooms, made up of broken bricks with mud plaster and CGI sheeted roof. She says that though there are two rooms, they are very small in size with less ventilation. Her sons are unable to study properly because of the darkness in the room. So for the improvement of her sons’ futures, she wants to reconstruct her house with spacious rooms. Therefore she has been seeking help to guide her and her family to make it possible.

Story 3: Name: Laxmi Gurung Family: Husband, 3 daughters Occupation: Housewife, (Husband, Foreign -employment in Malaysia) Monthly income: 35,000 Address: Ratnanagar-Salghari, Chitwan
Laxmi has been separated from other family members, living with her three daughters in one single room. Her husband is in Malaysia, who sends NRs35, 000 every month. The house she has been sharing is made up of broken bricks with mud plaster. She explains that it is miserable to sustain in a small room, cooking and sleeping with her two daughters so she feels that it is high time for her to build a house with 2-3 rooms and live with her daughters. Because her husband is in Malaysia, she has no idea how to start. Therefore Laxmi has been seeking help for proper guidance who can support fully to build her own house.

Story 4 Name: Nanu Karki Family: Husband, 1 son Occupation: Government officer (Army) Monthly income: NRs 12,000 Address: Ratnanagar-Salghari, Chitwan
Nanu’s husband is an army officer, he comes to the house only on holidays. She has been living with her son in a house with two rooms made up of broken bricks, cemented walls and CGI sheet roof. She tells that though her house is cemented, the bricks used are broken and she feels that it is not safe. Nanu wants to reconstruct her house using full bricks to make it strong and durable adding one more room. However, the income she has is not even sufficient for daily expenses. Therefore she is seeking financial support for the construction.

Story 5 Name: Laxmi Tamang Family: Husband, one daughter, one son Occupation: Driver Monthly income: NRs. 3000 Address: Ratnanagar-Salghari, Chitwan
All four members of Laxmi’s family live in a one roomed house with no enough space. The house walls are already damaged and highly vulnerable. Her house is in such a condition that it might collapsed at any time. This has caused her having sleepless night. She is even concerned that due to her house condition, her children will not be able to focus on their education. With monthly salary of only Rs3000, having a proper house is of far cry to her therefore Laxmi is in need of immediate help for house reconstruction.

Story 6 Name: Dorje Lama Family: wife, 5 sons (2 married), 2 daughter-in-laws Occupation: Labor Monthly income: NRS 20,000 (maximum) Address: Ratnanagar 9-Salghari, Chitwan
Dorje lives with his wife and five sons in a small one roomed house made up of broken bricks and tin sheeted roofing. Though he has three sons working in India and having monthly income around 20,000 his family still has poor living conditions. Sharing the same room with grown up sons and daughter-in-laws, has deprived them of their privacy and has been a major issue of concern in their family. Due to many members living in the same room with less ventilation has also created health issues. Dorje feels that it is high time to reconstruct his house with at least 2-3 rooms but due to poor financial condition, this has not been possible.

Story 7 Name: Mitthumaya Sunwar Family: Husband, Son (married), daughter-in-law, 2 grandchildren Occupation: Foreign employment (son) Monthly income: NRs 20, 000-25,000 Address: Ratnanagar 9-Sallaghari, Chitwan
Mitthumaya with her husband, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren are living in one single roomed house. It is made up of broken bricks with thatched roof. Due to the fragile house, and five members living under one congested room, their living condition is in extreme pitiful condition. The money sent by her son is hardly sufficient for the family, so it’s impossible to build a proper house with at least three rooms. Therefore to make it possible, she and her family is in need of great financial support and its management.

Story 8 Name: Sova B.K. Family: Husband, 2 sons, 2 daughters, 2 daughter-in-laws, 2 grandchildren Occupation: Labor Monthly income: NRs 10,000 Address: Ratnanagar 9-Salghari, Chitwan
Sova and her nine family members are sharing the house with three rooms, made up of broken bricks and CGI sheet roof. According to the numbers of member in family the rooms are insufficient as well as she feels that it might damage the house which is not so strong. Therefore she wishes to renovate her house and make it safe. But with a small income and large members in family she is wondering that her wish might not get fulfilled.

Story 9 Name: Nanimaya Moktan Family: Husband, 1 daughter Occupation: Labor Monthly income: NRs10, 000 Address: Ratnanagar 9-Salghari, Chitwan
Nanimaya has been living with her husband and daughter in a rented room, the house is made up of broken bricks with mud plaster. Every month she has to pay Rs500 to her landlord. She and her husband have been planning to build their own house with at least two rooms in it. But with the income of 10, 000, Nanimaya has not been able to think further about it. Her daughter’s education and other household expenses have been hardly covered by their monthly income. Therefore she wishes if there is any way out to support her to implement her plan into action.

Story 10 Name: Reeta Darai Family: husband , one son, one daughter Occupation: Housewife; husband works as a labor Monthly income: NRs.8000-10000 Address: Ratnanagar-Salghar, Chitwan
Reeta, her husband and children lives under a hut made up of broken bricks with thatched roof. Though she wishes to have a better shelter to live in, she does not have enough savings to make her wish come true. The amount of income they have is only sufficient for meals two times per day and paying children fees. Further she expresses her grief telling that there is no access to electricity and water. With no proper housing and sanitation facilities, Reeta feels that she and her family is living a dark life.
